The Cotswold Aviation Scholarship was founded in 2007 by Cotswold Airport owner Ronan Harvey...
It was launched with the aim of introducing the younger generation to the multitude of career opportunities within aviation through a mixture of on-site and educational talks involving industry expert talks, engineering facility tours, and an introductory level of hands-on flying experiences. In the past, the scholarship has been open to people who reside in Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Bristol and Avon, Berkshire, or Oxfordshire, aged between 15 and 17 on the first day of that year’s scholarship. Our aim has always been to make the aviation community as accessible as possible to scholars from all backgrounds and experience level, with the emphasis that no previous aviation experience or background in flying has been necessary to apply.
Our on-site visits and educational talks have included a variety of insights across the aviation industry from engineering sites creating key components for aircraft, an introduction into airport firefighting, talks on military operations and the career opportunities available, learning about air traffic service provisions and the types of service available, and companies involved in innovative design and development towards the future of aviation. This has all been achieved by working with our generous partners to showcase the many roles and careers available across the industry.
A further aspect to the scholarship program has involved providing the scholars with an introduction to learning to fly through the support of our enthusiastic based flying schools. We have provided a mixture of flights including microlights, light aircraft, and helicopters, along with simulator sessions to explore all the possibilities which are out there in the GA community.
