Cotswold Airport signs 3 Year Sponsorship Deal with Fairford Rugby Club

Fairford – 2nd October 2024 – Fairford Rugby Club today announces the signing of a Major Sponsor deal with Kemble based Cotswold Airport. The three-year sponsorship deal will see Cotswold Airport as main kit sponsor for the senior teams along with pitch side signage and advertising.

Fairford Rugby Club, founded in 1994 by George Ellis, has its grounds at Coln House in the picturesque Cotswolds town. The club fields men’s (The Badgers) and women’s (The Vixens) senior teams in the Dorset & Wilts North league. In addition to being an active sporting club, Fairford Rugby Club also hosts a successful summer festival weekend that sees an additional 3 thousand visitors to the club’s playing fields annually.

Michael Wrona, Sponsorship Secretary Fairford Rugby Club commented, “We are a small club with a large heart, so support from local businesses such as Cotswold Airport is key to the success and growth of the club and really means the world to us. Sponsorships like this help us to continue to build the club and drive us towards our goal of establishing our own clubhouse at the ground.

“We are fortunate to have such a thriving aviation hub nearby that is willing to support the local community. As a team we have always had a strong connection with aviation with members from the RAF and nearby Airbus. We look forward to reciprocating this sponsorship by making the most of the great facilities at the airport especially the AV8 restaurant for those all-important breakfasts!”

Cotswold Airport, formally RAF Kemble, is situated 15 miles from Fairford and provides a convenient aviation hub in the heart of the Cotswolds.

Suzannah Harvey, CEO Cotswolds Airport said, “We are really proud to sponsor both the women’s and men’s senior teams of Fairford Rugby Club over the next three years. Grass roots sport is such an important part of our community, we are happy to get behind this. I look forward to providing further encouragement from the sidelines and we can’t wait to welcome the club’s members and supporters to the airport, and obviously anyone wanting to fly in for the weekend for a match is also more than welcome!”

The successful 8 scholars, all aged between 15 to 18 and from the surrounding area, will enjoy a week-long induction into the world of aviation, including four hours flying experience in light aircraft and helicopters, along with simulator sessions thanks to the enthusiastic support of the on-site flying schools.

Now in its eleventh year, the established scholarship program introduces successful applicants to the broad experiences, roles and careers available in the general aviation community.

The program includes visits to engineering sites that manufacture aircraft components and companies that are designing and developing the aircraft of tomorrow such as Zero Avia and Vertical Aerospace. Students will receive introductions to airport firefighting, talks on military operations, control tower operations, air traffic service provisions and the opportunity to experience an introduction in learning to fly.

Industry luminaries will also be giving talks to ensure that the scholars are introduced to the wide variety of career options within the aviation space.

The scholarship program is generously sponsored by Pooleys flight equipment, who have kindly donated a flying kit for each of the scholars.

Now in its eleventh year, the established scholarship program introduces successful applicants to the broad experiences, roles and careers available in the general aviation community.

Suzannah Harvey, CEO Cotswold Airport commented, “It is exciting to once again announce the launch of our aviation scholarships for 2024. I do not take it for granted how lucky I am to get up and go to work at an airport every day, and it’s amazing to be able to share some of those experiences with the aviators of tomorrow. Feedback from previous years’ scholarship graduates below:

Verity – 2023 Scholar.

“The Cotswold Airport 2023 scholarship was truly one of the best experiences of my life, introducing me to aspects of aviation and aerospace engineering I didn’t even know existed! Some of the benefits of receiving this scholarship included my being able to experience my first ever flight in a microlight and helicopter, which was absolutely amazing. The scholars were also lucky enough to be able to visit and listen to talks from many different companies, such as Vertical Aerospace and Starspeed helicopters, as well as receiving lots of resources from the companies such as our Pooley’s flight bags, where we received lots of equipment to support our journey into flight, such as flight manuals and logbooks as well as other merchandise.  Overall, applying for this scholarship was a fantastic decision that has really shaped my views of what I want to do in future, and I really enjoyed it.”

Will – 2023 Scholar

“Firstly, the scholarship helped me gain vital understanding on areas of aviation not known to the public including our visit to Vertical Aerospace and ZeroAvia. Highlights for me included the flying we did with both Kemble Flying Club and Volar which gave me hands on experience allowing me to gain experiences I will never forget. The Pooleys flying bag including all its accessories has helped me massively of which I am so grateful for. I have been able to use the kit kindly gifted to us in both flying training in Cadets and in general flying I have done since the Scholarship. I’ve also been able to get in contact with multiple different companies to gain work experience to boost my knowledge further from the Scholarship. And finally, I would like to say a massive Thank You again to everyone involved in setting up the Scholarship and the people who assisted in giving us amazing opportunities inside of the Aviation Industry. I have been able to make some incredible friends of which we talk in a regular basis about all things aviation of which I’m so thankful for.”

Nancy – 2023 Scholar

“I have gone on to do more flying lessons and simulator sessions since the scholarship, and recently did a placement with Boeing, none of which I would’ve done without the encouragement of the scholarship. I am in the process of lining up work experience with the RAF as well as other local aviation-based companies for the next year, again as a result of the scholarship. In terms of the scholarship, coming into it with no flying experience whatsoever, I loved the actual flying, both in the microlight and the helicopter, and the ground school/tower exposure, as both gave me a really helpful, basic insight into the workings of an aircraft and how to operate in and around them. I also really enjoyed the site visits as they opened my eyes to the other aspects of the aviation industry that I hadn’t previously considered, me only wanting to be a pilot! I think the course gave an incredibly well-rounded view of the industry that set me up brilliantly for further experiences and opportunities since.”

MOD Celebrates Family Day at Cotswold Airport

MOD civilians and military colleagues recently hosted a family day at Cotswold Airport, their 3rd such annual event raising £14,000 for service related charities.

With the support of Cotswold Airport, local businesses, Gloucestershire police and voluntary groups, roughly 1000 enjoyed a day which offered something for probably just about everyone. Flypast and static displays of classic / vintage aircraft, vintage and super-cars, demonstrations by Glospol armed response and traffic, classic music, historical re-enactment by Gloucester Community Networking, and history displays included genuine artefacts from Stalag Luft III Prison Camp (The Great Escape) and from the MI9 the Special Operations Executive (SOE), Dowty aerospace technologies and award winning Cotswold Ales.

The formalities of cheque presentations were conducted Monday 2nd October at GCHQ Cheltenham with two presentations of £7,000 each to representatives from Soldiers Sailors Airman Family Association SSAFA https://www.ssafa.org.uk/gloucestershire and Combat Stress https://combatstress.org.uk

One of the cheques presented (photo in Image link) was by the GCHQ historian Dr Dave Abrutat to Sir Francis Richards; former Director GCHQ and Commander in Chief Governor of Gibraltar, now president of the SSAFA Gloucestershire branch. Apart from the obvious connection to Sir Francis, it was fitting that GCHQ was chosen as they proudly work to support the military. Particularly in the last 30 years, wherever and whenever British forces have deployed GCHQ has increasingly supported through the forward deployment of its own staff.

The MOD and fundraisers would like to go on record to express their gratitude to Cotswold Airport and staff for their support and generosity over the years, to enable the raising of many thousands of pounds and deliver a great day for all.
